Winter Skincare: How to Protect Your Skin Barrier as the Weather Changes

by Izzy Gannon on Oct 13, 2026

As the seasons change, you may notice your skin changing too.

Skin that felt perfectly balanced throughout summer can suddenly begin to feel dry, tight, flaky, sensitive or irritated as we move into autumn and winter. You might even find that products you've used for months suddenly don't feel quite right.

This is often a sign that your skin barrier needs a little more support.

At Fixation Skincare & Laser Clinic in Millhouses, Sheffield, we believe your winter skincare routine shouldn't simply involve adding the richest moisturiser you can find. Understanding what your skin needs  and knowing when to simplify rather than add more  can make a huge difference.

So, what exactly is your skin barrier, why can winter affect it, and what should you actually be using on your skin?

What Is Your Skin Barrier?

Your skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin and plays an essential role in keeping moisture in while helping to protect your skin from the outside environment.

When your skin barrier is functioning well, your complexion is more likely to feel comfortable, hydrated and balanced.

When it becomes compromised, you may start noticing:

  • Dryness or flaking
  • Tightness
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Redness
  • Itching or irritation
  • Products suddenly stinging when applied
  • A rough or uneven texture
  • Skin that feels dehydrated despite using moisturiser

One of the most important things to remember is that more skincare isn't always better skincare.

If your barrier is struggling, continually adding stronger active ingredients or exfoliating more frequently can sometimes make the problem worse.

Why Does Skin Become Drier in Autumn and Winter?

There isn't just one reason.

As temperatures drop, our skin is exposed to a combination of colder outdoor air, lower humidity and indoor central heating.

Moving repeatedly between cold outdoor environments and heated indoor spaces can contribute to moisture loss and leave the skin feeling drier than usual.

At the same time, many people continue using exactly the same skincare routine they used throughout summer.

The cleanser that worked perfectly when your skin was oilier in July may feel too stripping in December. You may need more hydration, a different moisturiser or fewer exfoliating products.

Your skincare routine should be able to evolve with your skin.

1. Start With a Gentle Cleanser

Cleansing is essential, but your skin shouldn't feel squeaky clean, tight or uncomfortable afterwards.

During autumn and winter, you may benefit from switching to a gentler, more hydrating cleanser, particularly if your skin is beginning to feel dry or sensitive.

The goal is to effectively remove makeup, SPF, excess oil and impurities without unnecessarily stripping the skin.

If your face immediately feels tight after cleansing, it may be worth reviewing what you're using.

2. Focus on Hydration and Barrier Support

Winter is the time to pay particular attention to ingredients that help your skin retain moisture and support its natural barrier.

Depending on your skin type, this may mean introducing products containing ingredients such as:

Hyaluronic acid to support hydration.

Ceramides to support the skin barrier and help reduce moisture loss.

Glycerin to attract and retain water within the skin.

Squalane to help soften the skin and support moisture levels.

Your moisturiser may also need to change with the season. Someone with naturally dry skin may benefit from a richer formulation during winter, while an oily or acne-prone skin may still require something lighter.

This is why we don't believe in recommending the same winter routine to everyone.

3. Be Careful With Your Actives

Retinoids, exfoliating acids and other active skincare ingredients can be incredibly useful when they're appropriate for your skin.

But using too many actives at once, particularly when your skin is already dry or compromised, can lead to irritation.

If your skin has suddenly become sensitive, this isn't necessarily the time to add another acid because TikTok told you to.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is strip your routine back to the basics and focus on supporting your barrier first.

Once your skin feels comfortable again, active ingredients can be reintroduced gradually where appropriate.

And if you're unsure what you should stop, start or continue using, speak to a professional before completely overhauling your routine.

4. Don't Put Your SPF Away

One of the biggest winter skincare myths is that you only need SPF when it's hot or sunny.

SPF is a year-round essential.

UV radiation doesn't disappear because the temperature has dropped, and UVA rays — which contribute to premature skin ageing — are present throughout the year.

Daily broad-spectrum SPF is particularly important if you're using ingredients or undergoing professional treatments that can increase your skin's sensitivity to sunlight.

So while your summer holiday may be over, your SPF shouldn't be.

5. Don't Forget About Your Lips, Neck and Décolletage

Winter dryness isn't limited to your face.

Your lips, neck and décolletage can all benefit from additional attention as the temperature changes.

Use a nourishing lip product regularly and remember to extend appropriate skincare and SPF down onto your neck and chest rather than stopping at your jawline.

Your hands can also become noticeably drier during colder weather, particularly with frequent washing, so keeping a good hand cream nearby can make a difference.

6. Avoid Over-Exfoliating Dry Winter Skin

When skin becomes dry and flaky, your first instinct might be to exfoliate it away.

But if that flaking is being caused by a compromised barrier, repeatedly exfoliating can potentially create even more irritation.

Physical scrubs, acids and exfoliating treatments all have their place when used correctly, but dryness doesn't automatically mean your skin needs exfoliating.

Sometimes it needs exactly the opposite: hydration, nourishment and time to recover.

This is another reason why understanding why your skin is behaving differently is so important.

7. Adjust Your Professional Treatments Too

Your home skincare isn't the only thing that may need to change with the seasons.

Autumn and winter can be an excellent time to introduce more corrective professional treatments, including microneedling and professional chemical peels, depending on your skin and individual concerns.

But professional treatments should still be planned around the condition of your skin.

If your barrier is already compromised, jumping straight into an intensive treatment may not be the right approach. At Fixation, we can first focus on restoring balance before progressing onto more active treatments.

Your treatment plan should work with your skin, not against it.

How Do You Know If You've Damaged Your Skin Barrier?

A compromised skin barrier doesn't always look dramatic.

Sometimes the first sign is simply that your usual products begin to sting.

You may notice persistent dryness, tightness, flaking, sensitivity or redness. Your skin may feel uncomfortable after cleansing or seem unable to stay hydrated regardless of how much moisturiser you apply.

If this sounds familiar, resist the temptation to throw another five products at the problem.

Simplify first.

A gentle cleanser, appropriate moisturiser and daily SPF can provide a good foundation while your skin settles, although persistent or significant skin symptoms should always be assessed by an appropriate medical professional.

What Should You Actually Be Using on Your Skin This Winter?

The answer depends on your skin.

A winter routine for someone experiencing acne and congestion will look very different from a routine designed for dry, sensitive or mature skin.

Rather than following a generic routine online, your skincare should take into account your:

  • Skin type
  • Current skin condition
  • Main concerns
  • Existing products
  • Professional treatments
  • Lifestyle
  • Skin goals

At Fixation, we work with professional skincare ranges including DermaQuest, NOON Aesthetics, Heliocare and Biretix, allowing us to recommend products based on what your individual skin needs rather than what's currently trending.
